What is ffxiv legacy server?

FFXIV Legacy servers are referred to a set of servers that were introduced to allow players who pre-ordered, or subscribed to the original FFXIV before its initial shutdown in 2012, to continue playing. These servers recognized the progress of legacy players, meaning they would retain all of their achievements, quests, and items that they had acquired before the shutdown. Additionally, players from Legacy servers could avail of a discount when subscribing to FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, a completely revised version of the original game.

Legacy servers were initially created to show gratitude towards the players who supported and believed in the game before its early shutdown due to poor reception. Although the difference in gameplay represented a significant change in direction, legacy players had a wealth of experience and resources which gave them an advantage over new players. However, the advantage was short-lived as over time, these servers saw a massive influx of new players.

Some of the perks that legacy players had were an experience bonus, exclusive titles, emotes, mounts, and gear. Legacy players also retained their characters' appearance, with the character names marked by the Legacy symbol, making it easier for players to recognize and interact with them.

As of 2021, the Legacy servers have merged with other servers, so players who were part of the Legacy program now play alongside regular players without any distinctions. Nonetheless, they still benefit from some of the aforementioned legacy perks.
